I'm quite surprised at the lack of a discussion thread on the proposed merger of Sunbury Downs College with Sunbury Secondary. Is there any discussion in the community?. Do you care?

At present a steering committee comprising a number of interested parties has been meeting to discuss the provision of secondary education in Sunbury. This has been going on for some 6 months. A proposal that effectively merges the 2 schools has been 'floated' & the steering committee will be making a brochure available to the public, detailing the pro's & cons of such a plan. Ultimately, the decision will rest with the College councils of the 2 schools, who are set to vote on 30/4/09 as to whether this happens.

Need more information?, want to have a say?, if you would like to be 'heard' on this subject it is imperative that you contact either of the schools, or the contacts listed on the brochure (which will be available shortly). What does the community want for Sunbury?

:)i support a merger.  2 sites for schooling, variouis experienced teaches to learn from and a greatert pool of educational resources to use is a plus.  we live close to sunbury college, a bus ride down to sunbury downs is not a difficulty. the learning curve style change of teachers will go as students become familiar and education should roll on smoothly per usual. change does not have to be scarey, wasteful or negative... The Merger was REJECTED last year.
Both schools will be going it alone until the next newly appointed education bureaucrat thinks merging 2 schools with a growing population is a good idea.

I have to admit I was in two minds about the merger.

One view was year 11 and 12 students would have more opportunity/choices of subjects to choose from.

But being forced to go to the nearest school to your home is not right. Not only did I choose a school not close to my home to avoid certain people but I chose the school right for my child.

I had also heard that alot of teachers and school staff were not happy with the merger and that made me wonder what did they know that the community didn't. At one meeting it was said that no teacher or staff member will be voting "yes" for the merger. Makes you think.

What is very disappointing if how people acted and what was said. I know it was a passionate subject but some people need to take a look hard look at themselves and fellow Sunbury residents, no matter what school they go to.

whats the deal.... ?

I'm Confused.... !

I know the merger was Rejected a while ago....
but some people have told me the merger will still take place in the near future... Huh?
Some people have said to me that soon students will be forced to goto the school nearest to them.
Which is true & how can either stupid Idea like this be forced apon Parents / Students???     Undecided

on one hand a student can go to one school for half of their high school life & another half of their high school life on the other side of town ...

or on the other hand...  Be Forced to goto nearest school eliminating Choice from the equation.....

this isn't a basketball REP Team, its a choice for the parents & students to make... based on academic value & even that fact that a student wants to goto the same school as his or her mates.....

ehh.   whats your view....

I heard the same rumour. I must admit I find it very hard to believe that so much time (and possibly money) went into the decision that the government (Huh?) education dept (Huh?) would just drop it.

It had also been said that the new trade centre would not be built without the merger so has the trade centre idea been dumped?

Have the schools mentioned anything about this? Where do the rumours come from?

Please note - there is no school merger.
Who knows in 10 years time it may again be proposed as a way to cut costs.
Sunbury Downs is performing at a high level and it's intake is increasing each year.
Sunbury college has a new principal who will improve uniform and attitude over the next few years.
The trade centre was dangled as a carrot by the government regardless of the merger but as far as I know there is no timeline as to when this be built if ever.

Please note - there is no school merger.

I was unsure due to the fact that friends and other people keep on telling me otherwise like I said in previous posts.

Curious 18, I get the feeling you are fairly new to the community, so if so, welcome Smiley

The rumors stem from a few discussions & articles in the local papers that resulted in a possible proposal of the merger of the 2 schools.

It was reported in the papers that both schools Principals & the Government had gotten together for discussions about it. But, thankfully I feel, as it was obviously not what was wanted by the actual peoople involved, being the Students & their Parents not the Principals &  the Government, the proposal was declined.

This is a link to an article by the Sunbury Leader in March of 2008. It will explain a little about the reaction  Tongue
