Read the local paper last night and was stunned at the crime in Sunbury article. We're quick to note other areas closer to the city being unsafe etc, but yet it seems Sunbury is lost to the thugs and idiots once the sun goes down. I know some will be quick to say this is all media hype and the higher levels of Vic Police will say the same thing. But this has continued to rear its ugly head for years and years now and yet again it has been highlighted about the lack of Police in Sunbury. When is the law going to take back our streets? and when is the justice system going to move away from the soft slaps on the wrist to the proper punishment these idiots deserve?

Walked the streets of Sunbury for years at night never felt unsafe, remember this is election year and the Police assoc are trying to bump their profile.  Had 2 occasions to call police in the last 5 years they attended within a reasonable period of time.  Today had to call an ambulance for a neighbour, they came within 10 minutes whilst the 000 operator kept me on the phone coaching, couldn't ask for more. yet you will hear the ambulance service is crap.

Sunbury is not an unsafe place to live compared to other Melbourne Suburbs, we are much safer here, the 1 assult a year makes the news as it's one per year wheras it happens daily in other areas and doesn't make the news.

Laurie, this is an excerpt from the article in the Sunbury Leader I was referring to;

"In the past 12 months Sunbury has had 49 reported incidents of graffiti, 136 instances of broken windows and 110 vehicles damaged. There were also 221 assaults, and while this figure includes domestic violence, 52 assaults were on streets or footpaths, four at parklands and reserves, four in restaurants and two were at the multilevel carpark, in Horne St."

I agree that this is probably a shadow of what other areas are seeing, but its still a significant amount of activity and without proper policing etc its only going to get worse.

It's amazing really. I would never have thought that Sunbury has so many assaults in a year. It would be good to know what the other towns look like in comparison.

Although, I must say, I have not noticed a lack of Police presence. I see them doing the rounds quite often when i am going downs Evans street.
At the same time i would never refuse more Police. It can only make our town safer.

"52 assaults were on streets or footpaths, four at parklands and reserves, four in restaurants and two were at the multilevel carpark, in Horne St" This equates to just over 1 a week!

110 vehciles damaged 2 a week!
49 Graffiti less than 1 a week!
136 broken windows. 2 a week

I would say the police and community not doing that bad a job in having a low crime rate.
Like everyone I am all for more police, but can you really justify it if only about 6 incidents of crime a week?

Hi all,

I am not really amazed by some of the figures listed here and just to add more to these figures, as I was on the bus this morning, there was a car which had been set on fire at the Sunbury United Sporting Club.

These social issues have been an issue in the past and they will continue to be an issue in the future.

Undecided  i'm a fairly out doors, social person, but I must be very lucky to not have seen any of this sort to thing.

I'm Certainly not Ignorant and I'm not saying these things don't happen in Sunbury, it just seems like I am always hearing about this sort of stuff, yet iv'e never seen anything worse than the occasional slightly rude drunk teenagers out the front of Safeway or Coles.

and III the car on fire might have caught fire due to Mechanical Reasons  Huh?  Maybe  Undecided

Smiley sunbury lost to the thugs is an overstatement.  crime is increasing but not at a level that suggests hopeless apathy or that it is being ignored.  one may approach a local newspaper and enquire about crime.  one may approach a member of parliament, one may approach members of the hume council, one may online read police websites....there is information out there to get and read....it is good to be concerned Smiley

To be honest with you, 6 crimes a week may not be so bad.... The real question is how many of the offenders were caught?

Question REALLY is how many crimes do police attend or even log into the system? Shocked
If it's not in the system, it will not be generated on a report. Cool
I know of many reports that went unlogged until people needed the police report to claim insurance or such and it was 'mysteriously' not in the system and all the details had to be re taken. Shocked
It is not a staffing issue as such but a work ethic issue...they don't want any new staff b/c then all the little lurks and perks will be discovered ( going home, unauthorised police vehicle use, palming off calls with 'unavailable police cars')
So if you palm people off, do attend, or don't log the report...crime seems non existent or less than it really is Undecided
CRIME PROBLEM SOLVED hat

Very good point Doc. How many victims of crimes are forced to follow up so that they can get justice?

Because if they are not reporting it, then no one is getting in trouble for it either.
